Lawson Software Offers New Application to Help Automate Hospital Supply Replenishment and Capture Patient Charges

April 06, 2009

ST. PAUL, Minn., Apr 06, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Lawson Software (Nasdaq: LWSN) today announced the general availability of Lawson S3 Point of Use, a software application that helps keep healthcare supplies in stock while providing tools to more accurately capture patient charges. The new application records when employees pull items from supply shelves and then synchronizes with Lawson Procurement to reorder supplies before they are out of stock. By automating the supply replenishment process, Lawson S3 Point of Use can help save time and reduce manual and redundant work for hospital staff. In addition, the application more accurately captures usage of patient chargeable supplies - syncing with patient billing systems, which can help increase patient billing revenue by reporting charges that previously may have gone unrecorded.

Lawson S3 Point of Use uses an intuitive system that can be accessed via touch screen and scanner, with a handheld device or through a standard desktop computer. Nurses may prefer to use a touchscreen and barcode scanner to record the supplies they pull for patients from supply closets within a healthcare facility. Or, they may prefer to use a handheld to readily scan supplies as they use them at a patient's bedside. In either case, materials managers can monitor and manage replenishment to help ensure that supplies are replenished in a timely fashion.

Geisinger Health System, based in Danville, Pa., is an 878-bed organization that has helped Lawson develop and test Lawson Point of Use. Geisinger has been a Lawson customer for nine years and currently uses Lawson systems for talent management, human resources, financial, and supply chain management.

"We historically spent a lot of time manually tagging supply items with charge stickers and following a manual counting process to properly maintain adequate unit supplies," said Darrel Dudeck, supply chain systems analyst at Geisinger Health System. "With Lawson S3 Point of Use, we're automating these time-intensive processes. Our staff can easily maintain supply levels and not worry about reordering or placing stickers on items and subsequently patient files. The system does the charging and order generation, which allows staff to spend more of their time and energy on patient care."

"Software systems can do a lot more to improve the business side of healthcare so staff can focus on the job at hand - caring for patients," said Nam Vo, vice president of global healthcare strategy for Lawson. "Healthcare organizations are facing tremendous cost pressures. We have customers that have saved millions of dollars just by improving supply and materials management. Lawson S3 Point of Use can help healthcare organizations uncover even more savings."
