Aker Philadelphia Shipyard Achieves $660,000 in Savings with Kronos® HR and Payroll

May 19, 2009

LONG BEACH, Calif. – APA’s 27th Annual Congress – May 19, 2009 — Kronos® Incorporated today announced that Aker Philadelphia Shipyard has achieved more than $660,000 in savings by using Kronos human resources and payroll applications. The $285 million builder of container ships and tankers has been using Kronos since 2005 to improve productivity, lower costs, and reduce payroll errors.

News Facts
Prior to using Kronos, Aker had three separate human resources legacy systems that maintained training requirements, schedules, contracts, and payroll data for its 800 employees. The systems weren't integrated and contained contradictory data leading to costly errors and wasted time.
After researching HR and payroll products from ADP, Ceridian, and Kronos, Aker selected Kronos based on cost, Aker’s experience with Kronos time and attendance software, and the prospect of total integration that only Kronos could provide.
The company saw 110 percent ROI within the first year of using Kronos and has achieved savings of approximately $220,000 annually since then. Savings came from eliminating 90 percent of payroll errors and significantly increasing productivity.
The Kronos HR system enables Aker to track training schedules and required hours to make sure Aker is maintaining a strong, skilled internal workforce, decreasing the need for expensive subcontracted employees.

"The pressure is always on to trim IT costs immediately, but being thorough now can help you save later. We began our integration initiative in 2004 and are still experiencing continuous improvements in cost savings and productivity."

"We used to pay approximately $90,000 a year to ADP in service bureau fees and tax filing error fees. That number has been cut to about $5,000 annually by using Kronos."

Amy Brar, senior director, HR/Payroll Line of Business, Kronos
"The pressure is on organizations to cut costs wherever they can. Aker is a terrific example of a company that has been focused on controlling labor costs, improving productivity, and minimizing compliance since long before the economy took a downturn. Its efforts to automate HR and payroll processes continue to pay dividends with each passing year."
