This week, BriefingsDirect’s Dana Gardner sat down for an exclusive talk with Workday ERP co-founder and co-CEO Aneel Bhusri, and took to his ZDNet blog to share some of the highlights. Bhusri, a former strategist at Oracle’s PeopleSoft, likens the two companies, and also expounds on how—Gardner feels—Workday is outlining a roadmap to the future advantages of cloud computing. Oracle kicked off their OpenWorld Conference this week in San Francisco—concurrent with SAP’s TechEd in Phoenix—and they have announced several improvements to their ERP package over the past couple days, namely a new system release for their Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) platform that includes an ERP integrator that improves financial reporting and provides for bi-directional data integration for budgeting and forecasting.

Last week, Microsoft announced enhancements one of their Dynamics ERP systems, MS Dynamics NAV 2009. These recent improvements were made in support of Microsoft’s promise to enable the Dynamics Business, which includes creating flexible business applications that can easily adapt to a business’s evolution. MS Dynamics NAV serves as a rapid development platform for customers in manufacturing, waste management, construction, fashion retail and others, and these recent improvements also aim to make the already highly sensitive system more intuitive.

No industry has been untouched by the recently tumultuous economy, and naturally ERP is one of them. So how will this already slow-moving industry absorb the economic shock? By speeding up, of course.

This development is evident in the rise of SaaS ERP products for SMEs—SaaS for the mid-market is being considered the next big thing. Two years ago SAP announced Business ByDesign (BYD), a SaaS ERP model, and it is currently being released at integrals. NetSuite and Salesforce.com have similar platforms available, and marketing language associated with them is centered on cloud computing.
